Whale Watching in Ilulissat* (Sailing between June 1 and September 10) *
Imagine the silence on Disco Bay, broken only by a deep breath when a humpback whale comes to the surface somewhere in front of the boat. A column of water vapor rises in the clear Arctic air, and a moment later the dark back glides calmly through the water before the tail fin lifts up and disappears into the depths. It's moments like this that make a whale watching trip in Ilulissat something really special.
Every summer the humpback whales head to the waters around Ilulissat to feed themselves fat in the nutrient-rich Arctic waters. From May to September we take you out and meet them, twice daily with departures at 10:00 and 15:00.
A personal experience
We sail in small boats with space for 7 or 10 passengers. This means that everyone gets a good seat at the rail and that there is time and tranquility to enjoy the experience without the hustle and bustle. Our boat drivers were born and raised in Ilulissat and know the waters and whales' movements in depth, and they are happy to talk about the whales, the sea and life in the Arctic along the way.
The tour goes out into the open sea, past icebergs of all imaginable shapes and sizes, while we keep looking for the distinctive puffs on the horizon. Sailing alone between the ice is an experience in itself.
On the whales' premises
When we find the whales, we turn off the engine and give ourselves plenty of time. We're not chasing the quick picture, but letting the whales determine the pace. In the silence, you can hear their breathing, follow them as they dive and come back up, and observe their behavior very close to nature's own terms. It is precisely the tranquility that makes the experience so strong, and many of our guests say that it is what they remember best afterwards.
The whale safari is an experience of a lifetime and we look forward to sharing it with you.
What should I bring?
Dress warmly for the northern sea. Even on summer days it can be cold out on the water, so please bring warm outdoor clothing, such as a wool or fleece sweater, preferably in several layers. Sturdy shoes are recommended.
